1. Close ghost rooms
A ghost room is a room sold for cash where the booking is never entered; the money is pocketed and the room is quietly cleaned and reused. To stop it, give every room every night exactly one recorded state (sold, vacant, out of order) so vacancy is a deliberate entry, not a blank. Then compare that state to evidence: a door card that opened the room, or a corridor camera that saw someone enter and stay through the night. A room used while marked vacant is a ghost occupancy.
2. Stop staff selling their own drinks
Bar staff often bring their own crates and sell them at hotel prices using the hotel's fridge, glasses and electricity, so hotel stock barely moves. The fix is to link every bar sale to inventory: when a drink is rung up, hotel stock goes down automatically, and at shift close the staff physically count the fridge. Bottles missing without a matching sale are flagged in naira, attributed to whoever was on duty.
3. Close cash gaps
Most Nigerian guests pay cash or bank transfer, which is easy to lose on paper. Run every till as a session: it opens with a declared float and closes with a counted amount, and the system knows exactly what should be there. Any shortfall is logged with the cashier's name. Bank transfers stay marked unconfirmed until someone with bank access confirms them.
Why this matters now
Nigerian hotel margins have been squeezed by inflation, fuel and diesel costs, and expensive maintenance. Leakage a hotel could absorb in good years now decides whether it stays open. Closing it is often the difference between profit and shutting down.
